There are many successes nurses accomplish in order to become an RN. One of the most important is passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Fellow nurses have provided us with some great tips for helping prepare for the exam. Here are five tips to help you pass the NCLEX:
Before the Exam
1. Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is needed for many jobs in the real world, but nursing especially. In such a fast-paced environment, the ability to make crucial decisions quickly and without hesitation is second nature, and deciding the right course of action can truly mean a life and death scenario. When taking the NCLEX, there may be several answers that appear “right” but you need to know the “most right” for that scenario. When studying for the NCLEX, practice critical thinking by focusing on making quick and efficient decisions. Usually, your first impression is the best. Don’t overthink the questions.
2. Don’t Cram for the Exam
This is a great tip for any test-taking student. No one has ever aced an exam by cramming. Especially when preparing to take the NCLEX, cramming is never the best option.
When studying for the NCLEX, a great tip is focusing on areas you found difficult in your coursework. Going back and relearning some subjects isn’t always a waste of time—it could help clear up a lot of misunderstandings.
Taking practice exams and exploring online tutoring websites will help you get organized in your mind and familiarize you with the topics necessary for the exam. If you have doubts about whether or not tutoring companies are helpful, our blog “Are Tutoring Companies Helpful?” gives great insight on the exam score differences between nurses using the extra help and those studying on their own.
One nurse reported that taking the practice tests was very helpful in preparing her for the NCLEX. The exam always tries to trick you and make you overthink some situations. By taking these practice tests it helped this nurse oversee the extraneous details and focus on the root of the questions.
During the Exam
4. Eliminate the Wrong Answers First
When considering each question, eliminate the clearly wrong answers. Narrowing down the answers will help you focus more on the correct answers and pick out the answer that makes the most sense.
Remember that the most obvious answer isn’t always the best answer.
5. Keep Calm and Be Comfortable
When first arriving for the exam, make sure you are comfortable and well-fed. The exam is going to last a couple of hours so wearing comfortable clothes and not worrying about food will help you focus more on the exam.
There will come a time when you don’t know the answer to a question—and that’s okay! Stay calm, give your best guess and move on. Dwelling on a question will just make you more stressed and lose time answering other questions you would know.
